Our Learning
Welcome to Spring 1 2020
H A P P Y N E W Y E A R!
We will be continuing the term with our topic 'Bright Lights, Big City!' which focuses on our capital city London. We are looking after a bear who has lost his way and would like our help to get home. After looking inside his suitcase, we are trying to piece together information to help us get the bear back to his home in London safely.
Geography
We have used Google Earth, maps and atlases to name and locate the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and locate major and capital cities of the UK. We will use simple positional language and compass directions to navigate around the Landmarks in London. We will also compare similarities and differences between living in a town or living in the countryside and discuss the advantages and disadvantages.
History
We will step back in time to discover the events of the Great Fire of London through books, stories, recounts and videos. We will look at at how London was rebuilt after the fire and compare the past to the present. We will also role play scenarios of some of the significant events during the fire to develop children's understanding of what had happened and why it happened.
D&T
The children will be designing and making Tudor houses using cardboard boxes, tissue paper and paint. We will then add flames using coloured tissue paper to recreate Pudding Lane at the time of the fire.
Art
The children will be mixing primary colours to paint the flames of the great fire. They will also use and develop a range of art and design techniques to design and make their own Christmas cards and calendars.
Maths
We will focus on addition and subtraction this term as well as consolidating number and place value knowledge. You can support your child's development and skill in mathematics by counting regularly in steps of 2, 5 and 10 forwards and backwards. Use a 100 square to practise number recognition, odd and even numbers and counting 10 more and 10 less than a given number. By the end of KS1 children should be able to confidently recall mentally their number bonds to 10 and 20 as well as know times tables facts for x2, x5 and x10.
English.
We will be focusing on writing instructions this term. We will look at the features of different types of instructional texts and build our own success criteria for what a good one looks like. You can support your child's development in writing by introducing and explaining the meaning of different vocabulary that they come across in their everyday life and story books. Use the common exception word mats that have been sent home with your child to practise the spelling of those words. Give children plenty of opportunity to write for different purposes at home. For example helping you write out a shopping list or writing a note to a friend or family member. You can also encourage your child to practise their letter and number formation using the handwriting line guides that were sent home.
Science
Our current topic is 'plants'. We will begin by observing and identifying various seeds. We will discover what plants need to survive and have a go at planting some cress.
